Blog Series | Part 2 of 4

In the first part of this series, we discussed a variety of filter coffee-based processes, and now we’ll look at some more well-known procedures such as:

  • Espresso Machine
  • Moka Pot
  • Iced Coffee
  • Syphon Coffee

Espresso Machine

Espressomachines are used to make espresso shots whereas “Coffee/Steaming” machines can be used both to make traditional Americano’s as well as lattes.

  • Grind around 15 – 24 grams per cup (adjust to taste).
  • Add your ground coffee and tamp down with a tamper, ensuring it is level.
  • Place portafilter in the group head where you will place one shot glass (single) or two shot glasses (double).

The following are some of the most popular espresso-based coffee beverages:

  • Espresso – an Italian drink that is prepared by forcing steam through fine, tightly packed coffee grounds under high pressure to form a thick, concentrated liquid that is served in small cups with no milk or sugar added.
  • Cappuccino – composed of espresso and steamed milk, then topped with foam on top for extra texture. This is usually consumed during breakfast hours but you can have one any time!
  • Long Black / Americano – espresso mixed with hot water so it’s weaker than regular coffee because it doesn’t contain as much caffeine. You may need to add some milk or sugar if this version isn’t sweet enough for your tastes.
  • Latte – espresso mixed with steamed milk for a sweeter, milder version of coffee. You can also add foam and chocolate to the top so it’s like drinking an iced mocha!

Moka Pot

The coffee is brewed in a small pot that sits on top of your stove, very popular in eastern countries like Italy or France.

  • To make, finely grind beans and pour into the filter basket attached. Fill up the bottom reservoir with cold water then place it on the stovetop until it boils, steam will start coming through a spout that is usually used for pouring when ready!

Iced Coffee

Brew your coffee as you normally would but instead of serving it hot, pour over ice! Adding milk and sugar will make it taste like a frappe which makes for an amazing drink on those hot summer days.

  • Brew coffee double strong then pour into a pitcher half filled with ice. Add milk/sugar depending on preference before serving!
  • Once ready, pour over ice and add milk/sugar if desired before enjoying your delicious cold drink that is great for summertime even as an afternoon snack with some tasty cookies perhaps?

Tip: use your leftover brewed coffee to make ice cubes so they don’t dilute the iced beverage!

Syphon Coffee

Brewing coffee in a syphon brewer is an exciting process. Many different types of beans can be used to make this type of brew, which produce unique tastes and aromas that are not produced by other methods. This method also allows you to taste various flavours from one bean or blend without getting overwhelmed by any unwanted elements such as bitterness or acidity. You will find yourself tasting things that you have never picked up on before when brewing with a syphon machine because there are no paper filters involved so it picks up more flavour profiles than your typical drip-style brewers! The average ratio should be 60 grams per litre depending on preference but some people prefer a little bit less while others enjoy having a lot.

The brewing process begins with boiling water, which builds up pressure in the lower chamber to drive the water up to the upper chamber where it is cooled by passing through ground coffee. When the water has finished its cycle, it drains back down into the lower chamber and the process can be started anew.
